The call for papers of the second edition of ILUSTRAFIC, 2nd International Congress on Illustration, Design and Visual Culture that will take place on October 1st, 2nd and 3rd, 2015, in the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, is open.

ILUSTRAFIC invites all those researchers interested in participating with a paper on any of the four theme areas proposed. Each participant can send a maximum of two proposals that will be reviewed by the Scientific Board of the Congress, by RCTs.


March 8th – Deadline for the reception of abstracts
March 23rd – Notification of acceptance
May 25th – Deadline for the reception of the complete paper


Starting up a congress focused on graphic illustration seems to make it obligatory to mark the limits framing this discipline. However, the strategy chosen in this case goes down the opposite path. Since nowadays culture is manifesting a blurring of borders between the disciplines that use visual expression, the objectives of this congress will have more to do with interaction and openness that with specialisation.

Work in progress refers, in the artistic field, to partly finished materials or products which are found in the different stages of the process of production and which set off creative works. Its analysis and observation are part of the artistic task as an essential element of the resulting work. That is why the necessary reflection about how ideas are generated is the starting point of this section, which implies the origin of creation and a personal and professional attitude, where the role of intuition and its confrontation or integration in a work methodology are of great importance: the relationship with the context (the order, the client, the observer), as well as the necessary innovation and renewal of the means or the work of personal experimentation dissociated from any order.

The current culture reveals a dissolution of borderlines among the disciplines that use visual expression, and the analysis of illustration must open itself to points of view that widen the classical notion of skill and style. However, in this media world-wide universe of ours, we also get surprised by the proximity of expressive languages based on the”rescue of styles” or on the recovery of expressive means from previous periods or authors whose formal and esthetic influence is really obvious on illustrators or artists from very different countries. That proximity and influence of illustrators from different periods is the focal point of this section.

A process of analysis is that in which starting from information related to a matter of discussion, we can reach deep knowledge about it and then deduce any conclusions that arise from it. Thus, new knowledge and continuous renewal in the area of illustration can be generated from current theories about the object of study. This is the main starting point in this area which expects to unite the reflections about the historical evolution of illustration, its techniques, process or communicative approaches by bringing together the discourses and the current graphic trends.

Nowadays the communication of information through the combination of graphic tools like text and moving images, as well as the use of new gadgets like tablets or smartphones has opened up new territories for graphic creation. The exploration of this new perspective and the possibilities of illustration to be adapted to these media, mainly in the creation of contents for apps, are an undeniable fact which can lead to interesting reflections about the present and future of illustration in this field.
